Cargo traffic in Japan’s Kobe port climbed 6.6% in January from a year earlier to 7.632 million tonnes, according to preliminary figures released by the Kobe municipal government on 15 April.<\/p>\n

Of the 7.632 million tonnes, 4.010 million tonnes came from foreign trade, up 1.8% from a year earlier, and the remaining 3.622 million tonnes came from domestic trade, up a robust 12.5% year on year (y\/y).<\/p>\n

In foreign trade, Kobe exported 1.725 million tonnes of cargo, up 8.1%, and imported 2.285 million tonnes of cargo, down 2.5%.<\/p>\n

Kobe handled 201,822 teu of containers in January, up 0.6% from the same month last year.<\/p>\n

Of the 201,822 teu, 157,337 teu came from foreign trade, down 1.7% from a year earlier, and the remaining 44,485 teu came from domestic trade, up 9.8% y\/y.<\/p>\n

In January foreign trade, 83,551 teu were exported, up 3.5% from a year earlier, and 73,786 teu were imported, down 7.0% y\/y.<\/p>\n

Kobe was once Japan’s busiest port until the Hanshin earthquake in 1995 damaged much of the city’s infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n
