{"id":717,"date":"2014-10-02T09:20:22","date_gmt":"2014-10-02T09:20:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seafarersrights-over.temp-dns.com\/?p=717"},"modified":"2014-10-02T09:20:22","modified_gmt":"2014-10-02T09:20:22","slug":"right-to-social-security-protection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seafarersrights.org\/right-to-social-security-protection\/","title":{"rendered":"Right to social security protection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Under the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (\u2018MLC\u2019):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A seafarer has the right to some social security protection from the country where they are ordinarily resident.\u00a0 It should be no less favourable than that enjoyed by shore workers resident in the territory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A seafarer\u2019s country that has ratified the MLC must choose at least three types of social security protection from this list:\n<ul>\n<li>medical care;<\/li>\n<li>sickness benefit;<\/li>\n<li>unemployment benefit;<\/li>\n<li>old age benefit;<\/li>\n<li>employment injury benefit;<\/li>\n<li>family benefit;<\/li>\n<li>maternity benefit;<\/li>\n<li>invalidity benefit; and<\/li>\n<li>survivors benefit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Social security schemes can take many forms.
