{"id":22674,"date":"2024-06-24T14:01:17","date_gmt":"2024-06-24T13:01:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/seafarersrights.org\/?p=22674"},"modified":"2024-06-24T16:31:59","modified_gmt":"2024-06-24T15:31:59","slug":"mlc-65-effective-says-sri","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seafarersrights.org\/mlc-65-effective-says-sri\/","title":{"rendered":"MLC 65% effective says SRI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New research from SRI, the international pan-industry body researching maritime and seafarers\u2019 law, concludes that the Maritime Labour Convention is not being strictly and evenly enforced on a global basis.\u00a0 The findings identify substantial achievements in the enforcement of the MLC, but also identify significant gaps.\u00a0 The research has adopted a unique approach by evaluating the involvement of a wide range of stakeholders and role players in the Convention.\u00a0 It also presents a Table of Indicators that assesses the enforcement of the MLC by individual States.<\/p>\n<p>Taking the findings as a whole and aggregating all regions of the world, it is very approximately estimated that implementation and enforcement of the MLC is achieving a success rate of around 65%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese findings challenge any complacency about the MLC working efficiently and uniformly around the world,\u201d says Deirdre Fitzpatrick, Executive Director of SRI. \u201cThe high level of ratifications and the high percentage of coverage of world tonnage could lead to the view that the MLC is widely effective around the world.\u00a0 But the research shows a different reality and points to where more efforts are needed to address the gaps in the effectiveness of the MLC.
