SRI has announced the completion of a new research project aimed at assessing how effective the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) is in terms of its implementation and enforcement.\u00a0 The project identifies what the Convention has achieved since it entered into force in August 2013, as well as gaps which, if addressed, could help to future proof the Convention. \u00a0The findings will be released shortly.<\/p>\n
The research has adopted a unique approach by taking into account a wide range of considerations to assess the overall effectiveness of the MLC.\u00a0 It covers the involvement of a range of stakeholders and role players who have an interest in the successful delivery of the Convention. \u00a0These include the ILO, states, port state control, shipowners, seafarers,\u00a0 the ITF Inspectorate and courts around the world.<\/p>\n
Deirdre Fitzpatrick, Executive Director of SRI, says:<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is now more than ten years since the MLC entered into force and despite its widespread ratification, the question arises as to the extent to which the Convention is being fully, completely and uniformly implemented and enforced around the world. This project, commissioned by the ITF, aims to provide an independent, impartial and fair answer to that question.<\/p>\n
