{"id":22172,"date":"2023-03-15T07:31:24","date_gmt":"2023-03-15T07:31:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/seafarersrights.org\/?page_id=22172"},"modified":"2023-03-15T07:32:01","modified_gmt":"2023-03-15T07:32:01","slug":"minimum-age","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/seafarersrights.org\/sri-seafarer-resources\/mlc-advice-for-seafarers\/key-topics\/minimum-age\/","title":{"rendered":"Minimum age"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Under the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (\u2018MLC\u2019):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A person must be 16 years old or above to work as a seafarer.<\/li>\n<li>A seafarer who is between 16 and 18 years of age can work on a ship but cannot do:\n<ul>\n<li>Night work* (with some possible exceptions); or<\/li>\n<li>Work that puts the seafarer\u2019s health or safety at risk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What work is likely to be a health or safety risk is determined by the competent authority, after consultation with shipowner and seafarer organisations.<\/p>\n<p>*&#8217;<em>Night&#8217; is determined in accordance with national law and practice.
