{"id":21840,"date":"2022-05-18T12:55:09","date_gmt":"2022-05-18T11:55:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/seafarersrights.org\/?p=21840"},"modified":"2022-05-18T13:02:56","modified_gmt":"2022-05-18T12:02:56","slug":"more-states-must-ratify-mlc-if-it-is-to-have-comprehensive-global-reach-says-sri","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seafarersrights.org\/more-states-must-ratify-mlc-if-it-is-to-have-comprehensive-global-reach-says-sri\/","title":{"rendered":"More states must ratify MLC if it is to have comprehensive global reach says SRI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21186 alignleft\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/DSC_6771-resized-1-e1563184553602-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seafarersrights.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/DSC_6771-resized-1-e1563184553602-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/seafarersrights.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/DSC_6771-resized-1-e1563184553602-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/seafarersrights.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/DSC_6771-resized-1-e1563184553602-120x120.jpg 120w, https:\/\/seafarersrights.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/DSC_6771-resized-1-e1563184553602-27x27.jpg 27w, https:\/\/seafarersrights.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/DSC_6771-resized-1-e1563184553602.jpg 374w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>In a statement submitted to the Special Tripartite Committee (STC) meeting held last week, SRI, the international pan-industry body researching maritime and seafarers\u2019 law, called for more States to ratify the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) to ensure a level playing field in the shipping industry.<\/p>\n<p>At the meeting, Deirdre Fitzpatrick, Executive Director of SRI said: \u201cMore ratifications are needed to bring the Convention on a par with SOLAS, MARPOL and the STCW, the other three pillars of international shipping.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhilst it is heartening to see that the MLC is now ratified by 101 States covering more than 96 per cent of the world\u2019s gross shipping tonnage, these other conventions are each ratified by more than 155 States and cover over 99 per cent of the gross tonnage of the world fleet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout more ratifications, and despite the principle of no more favourable treatment, there will continue to be ports and regions around the world where ships may sail free of the MLC.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>Ms Fitzpatrick also addressed the failings of the MLC during the COVID pandemic, when, more than ever, the industry saw seafarers\u2019 lives at risk and their rights being violated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our statement to the STC last year, we referred to the calls to give seafarers key worker status,\u201d said Deirdre Fitzpatrick. \u201cThe IMO continues to call on its members to designate seafarers as key workers and we believe that this issue should be discussed at a future meeting of this Committee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also believe that that this Committee could bring its expert thinking on the issue of the fair treatment of seafarers following maritime casualties and accidents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Fitzpatrick welcomed the recent ratifications of the MLC by Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Oman and San Marino, and remarked that the overall number of proposed amendments for the session \u2013 and the successful adoption of eight amendments and three resolutions &#8211; showed that the MLC continues to be a vital and living instrument, seeking to keep pace with the changes in the industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a full transcript of SRI\u2019s statement to the STC meeting, please click <a href=\"\/statement-from-sri-to-the-special-tripartite-committee-meeting-stc4-part-ii-may-2022\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n ","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a statement submitted to the Special Tripartite Committee (STC) meeting held last week, SRI, the international pan-industry body researching maritime and seafarers\u2019 law, called for more States to ratify the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) to ensure a level playing field in the shipping industry.
