{"id":14561,"date":"2017-01-18T15:13:49","date_gmt":"2017-01-18T15:13:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/seafarersrights.org\/?p=14561"},"modified":"2018-06-25T13:22:34","modified_gmt":"2018-06-25T12:22:34","slug":"mlc-abandonment-provisions-coming-into-force-itf-comment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seafarersrights.org\/mlc-abandonment-provisions-coming-into-force-itf-comment\/","title":{"rendered":"MLC abandonment provisions coming into force: ITF comment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The ITF (International Transport Workers is giving a warm welcome to the major new Maritime Labour Convention provisions on crew abandonment that come into force tomorrow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">ITF president Paddy Crumlin said: \u201cFrom tomorrow the mechanisms will be in place for a huge change that will finally treat the running sore of crew abandonment. At last the fundamental idea that those who send seafarers to sea have a responsibility for them is enshrined in regulation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He continued: \u201cThis provision has been a long time coming, and, just as with the MLC itself, the ITF is proud to have been involved since its conception, working alongside the ILO, governments and shipping organisations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">ITF general secretary Steve Cotton commented: \u201cThese new provisions are deeply significant, and a worthy addition to the hugely significant MLC itself. All parties must now work together to ensure that they are put into action, and address those areas in the world where there\u2019s an absence of MLC ratification.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He concluded: \u201cIt\u2019s important that seafarers understand what the changes mean. We recommend that they check that there is a valid insurance certificate on board and realise that if abandonment does occur that they must raise the alarm right away.
